About me

My name is William Tice and I have lived in Central Texas for most of my life. I graduated from Lampasas High School in 1999, and then served in the United States Army. After leaving the military, I attended Texas A&M University, Central Texas, and pursued both my Undergraduate and graduate degrees from there in the fields of English, Linguistics, and Writing Pedagogy. I have been teaching at BMS for four years now and look forward to the year ahead. Below is my syllabus for 6th grade English Language arts.

Welcome to the 2025-2026 school year! I am very excited about all that we have in store for the year. I hope that our ELA class will challenge your child while paving a path for lifelong success through literacy and critical thinking skills.

Course Description

The sixth grade Language Arts curriculum stems from the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. Reading, writing, speaking, listening, and collaborative strategies are used purposefully to build knowledge and skills and to help students become independent readers, writers, and thinkers. Below is an outline of what our year will look like.

Unit 1: Testing Our Limits

Unit 2: You and Me

Unit 3: In the Dark

Unit 4: Personal Best

Unit 5: Making Your Mark

Communication

I am available during my 5th period conference on Mondays or by appointment. Please let me know if you would like to meet!  (1300-1350). I can be reached by email anytime at [email protected]. Email is my preferred method of communication. To set up parent/teacher phone conferences, please email me and we can set up a time. I can be reached at the middle school’s number (512-756-6182)

Interactive Journal

Students will keep an interactive journal that will be used for journaling, warm-ups, class notes and vocabulary. This year, students’ journals will work as a portfolio of their cumulative work for the year. Each assignment will have its place so that students can celebrate their achievements with their family.

Discipline Guidelines

We will follow the code of student conduct in the BMS handbook.  We have high expectations for each student to be:

  • Prompt - In your seat and working on the Warm-up activity when the tardy bell rings.
  • Prepared - Come to class with all necessary supplies (agenda, pencil) and any assigned work.
  • Productive - Students are engaged and participating.
  • Positive - Expecting and striving for success for themselves and others.
  • Polite - respect for staff, other students, self, and property.

NOTE: Cellphones, airpods, and smart watches are required to be turned off and put away in your student’s backpack.

Grading

A great deal of your grade will be based on the amount and the quality of your efforts in the process of reading and writing.  Please use your class time wisely and have your assignments completed on time. The breakdown of grades is as follows:

  • 50% - Minor (daily practice, journal checks, quizzes, etc.)
  • 50% - Major (essays, tests, CBA, etc.)

Late Work

Assignments are due on time! Assignments that are not completed by the assigned due dates will be marked as a “missing assignment” in the gradebook. After assignments are 5 days late, this grade will be changed to 0. This will have a major impact on grades. However, I will generally work with students to be successful, and will allow missing assignments to be made up until a specified date near the end of every 6-weeks.
